the fourth spring arrived and Cambyses was still in Egypt in a fertile land that he inherited from his father, Cyrus. He also developed it and in fact, it was an impossible dream made true...
Egypt, the land of holy cats and crocodiles, pyramids and mummies, and the black-skinned people who believed that they have the oldest nation in the whole world.
It was the spring of 522 B.C, when unfortunate news reached the king.
"What did you say?! My brother, Bardia, has revolted against my empire?!! How is this possible when ..." and then he became silent. It was a secret that had to be kept hidden for now. A secret soaked in his brother's blood. But it seemed that he was still alive and planning to take over the empire's throne.
An assuring voice took him out from his deepest worries.
"My king, this cannot be Bardia who's revolting against you. Don't be afraid, I buried him with my own hands." and the king was relieved trusting his most loyal servant's words.
By the next dawn, Cambyses and his army were on their way to Persia. They crossed the deserts of Egypt but the further he went, the more distressing news he received concerning his brother:
"By the order of the king, no one has to pay taxes anymore for
"King Bardia shows himself only to his most trusted followers."
"Who is this man that is pretending to be my brother?"
As he reached Syria, a messenger came claiming to be sent by
Bardia to deliver a message to Cambyses.
"By the order of Bardia, as of now, this Army shall only follow
the orders of King Bardia, son of Cyrus." he announced.
"Have you seen the king's face yourself, messenger?" said
Cambyses. "No!" he replied. "But everyone keeps saying that
it's him, son of Cyrus"
Suddenly Cambyses jumped to his feet as if he had discovered something important, but he froze where he stood as hot blood covered his feet running from the wound made by the king's dagger; it had accidentally been unsheathed and as several days passed by, the darkness of disappointment filled the camp. Even the doctors couldn't do anything about it...
Summer took over spring, but there was no hope for Cambyses in taking the Throne. All that he wanted to do was to keep the Achaemenid Empire strong. His last words were: "I wish you vast and fertile lands should you manage to kill this traitor."
By the late dusk, the screaming of women and the yelling of men echoed across the camp. Cambyses' only cousin, a young man, the private spearman of the king, was silent and deep in thought: The thought of reaching the throne of the Achaemenid Empire. A voice within, calls him to his homeland.
Darius was on his way to Persia...
